Introduction

“I want to start my own business.”

That’s superb!

Starting your own business is probably the best decision you make.

The level of financial freedom and control that having a business can have over your life is unparalleled.

But starting your own business is a daunting task, especially if you are from a non-business background and starting from scratch.

You may have idols from the business world whose success ignited passion in you, which is good, but you need to understand and be ready because your path ahead is most likely going to be bumpy and risky.

You have to consider so many things, from formulating a formidable business idea to formulating positioning, setting up your organization, and much more.

Challenging, right?

If despite these challenges your passion for entrepreneurship is burning still like never before, then we have some tips to help you start a business.

Here is a 9-step guideline on how you can start your own business from scratch.

9 Steps to Start your Business

1. Identify and Finalize Your Business Idea

What is a business idea?

Simply, it’s a spark in your mind that sets you in the course of starting a business.

It’s an idea that solves a problem in the market. In business it doesn’t matter what you want to sell, what matters is what people want to buy.

Regardless of your niche, try to identify that need, that pain point, which is still unresolved.

Once you identify the need, think of how you can satisfy that need and bingo!

That’s your business idea.

But how do you get to know people’s pain point?

Well, people are quite vocal when their needs are not satisfied.

Just go to the App Store or Google Play Store and read reviews of any low rated app, and you will understand.

Similarly, identify channels where consumers/producers of your niche are vocal, for example Reddit or Consumer Reports, and you will get an idea of the trend, the gap, and what people are looking for.

Most importantly, don’t forget to study your competitors, if any, as they often left breadcrumbs to success. Put these all together, and you have a business idea.

2. Formulate a Business Strategy

What is a business strategy?

It’s a pathway between your raw idea and finalized product / service that earns money for you.

Your idea will only be sustainable if you know how to monetize it. And to do that you need to set goals for every step of your business strategy.

Always remember, these goals should be SMART, which means specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound.

An important part of your business strategy is identifying the target audience.

You should conduct market research to learn about your potential customers and their needs.

Competitor studies are also a good way to understand how you can do your job better and attract customers.

Once you identify your target audience it’s time to show your unique value propositions that makes your business different from the competitors.

This will also define your market positioning.

Identify the platforms where your target audience is mostly present and then place your unique value proposition to gain initial traction.

3. Select a business name and register your company

The next step of opening a business is choosing a name.

It is very important because that will be your identity in the market.

You can unleash your creative instincts here but make sure that the name should unequivocally represent your brand.

Also, while choosing a name, be careful that it should be unique and is not already in use by some other business, to avoid trademark infringement.

Register your company as per the laws and regulations in your jurisdiction.

4. Obtain business licenses and permits

The specific licenses and permits you need will vary depending on the type of business you are starting and the location of your business.

You can usually find information about the licenses and permits you need from your local government.

Carefully go through the information to fulfill every requirement.

You can also consult industry experts, legal professionals and experienced fellow businesspersons before taking a final call.

5. Find a business location

If you plan to run an online business then you can do it from anywhere, even your home. But if your plan is to operate from a physical storefront/ office then you shall look for space that meets your requirements.

6. Finance your business

There are several ways to fund your business, you can start with your own savings, you can go for a bank loan, you can approach an investor(s), or you can also generate funds via crowdfunding.

Which way you choose will depend on how much fund you need to get started and how quickly you wish to scale your business.

However, we would recommend choosing a way that gives you maximum freedom with minimum risks.

7. Set up business accounts

Financial management is a very important task to do when you get started.

You will need to set up a business bank account to ensure you can carry out your operations without a hiccup.

This will help you track your spending.

8. Establish Social Presence

What’s seen is sold. This is true for any business.

And the best way to make your business visible is to leverage the mass-reaching capabilities of internet and social media.

You can start with building an attractive website that shows your products, services, and showcases your expertise by addressing problems through blogs and Reviews.

You can also explore social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn to check which one is most relevant for your business.

Create engaging content for the platforms and don’t forget to engage in conversation or answer question on these platforms.

9. Hire employees

You will need helping hands to run your day-to-day business operation, and with time as your business grows you will need more people to handle tasks.

Decide carefully how many employees your business needs and for which operations.

A smart way is starting with fewer employees and gradually increasing the number as your business grows or needs arise. This will make your business agile and lean.

Conclusion

Starting a business requires patience, dedication and lots of trust in yourself.

The path is, no doubt, difficult, but with proper planning and efficient execution you can turn your dream into a thriving enterprise.

What you need to do is do comprehensive market research, create a solid plan based on the research, start small with a few like-minded people, and evolve according to customer and market feedback.

Most importantly, never lose hope and keep your dedication at the highest level; your business will shine more than you have ever imagined.
