Is Reddit Killing Google?

Introduction

Google- the word synonymous with online search has been a part of every online user’s daily life. However, this search engine giant is slowly being eclipsed by Reddit a niche community platform. From a small online forum to an indispensable search tool for millions Reddit is slowly transforming into an alternative to Google. But, is Reddit killing Google?

Reddit’s Transformation Journey to a Search Tool

With daily active users at approximately 97.2 million in the third quarter of 2024, Reddit has now achieved its creators’ target of being the “front page of the Internet“.

This American social news aggregation, content rating, and forum social network has since its launch in June 2005 become the go-to place for genuine answers to queries based on personal experiences and diverse perspectives of Redditors.

The growing popularity of Reddit can be attributed to the following factors:

1. Declining Trust in Google’s Results

Over the years Google’s authenticity and reliability have come into question because of the increasing SEO optimization of content. Paid ads and a flair for SEO optimization of online content can help businesses and content reflect higher on the Google search pages resulting in authentic content being pushed down on the page.

Reddit on the other hand gives its users access to user-created content and Reddit’s forum format allows user-driven discussions making it easier to obtain authentic and genuine information.

2. Specificity of Reddit Communities

Reddit’s subreddit forums have a substantial impact on the growing popularity of Reddit. Subreddits offer users a chance to have in-depth discussions about niche topics with experts and other regular users by giving them a chance to gain access to specific information about a topic. Whether it is the latest global news or the up-and-coming developments in the tech sector users can get detailed discussions on the same on Reddit’s web forum simply by typing “r/news” or “r/technology”.

3. Greater Engagement

Another aspect of Reddit that I feel most contributes to its growing popularity is the engagement it offers. Reddit users can have a two-way communication on Reddit forums unlike Google which does not offer any such engagement.

Reddit gives its users the opportunity to ask follow-up questions to their queries and have in-depth discussions about any topic with other users and even experts in the field of the query at hand. This makes it a more fulfilling option for users than Google.

Reddit Vs. Google

While Reddit is hastily overtaking Google as the go-to for any user queries, there are still several areas where Reddit continues to fall short. Some of the advantages and shortfalls of using Reddit and Google are:

1. Content

My observation of Reddit and Google has led me to believe that Reddit users are more likely to find the information they are looking for through Reddit as it works on the content generated by users from their own experiences.

Unlike Google where answers have been curated to ensure high SEO ratings, Reddit continues to provide its users with honest and diverse opinions about the query at hand.

2. Insights

Reddit outshines Google in the insights that it offers to its users. Google’s SEO-based ranking system fails to replicate the detailed and informative insights that are made available on subreddits by professionals and enthusiasts.

3. Real-Time Updates

Reddit is often the chosen platform for discussing trending topics and breaking news. I have often observed Reddit as being more proactive in talking about current topics as users often take to subreddits to share their opinions on trending topics much faster than Google can index its content.

4. Experience

As far as user experience is concerned, Google continues to stay way ahead of Reddit. While Google provides quick results, I found Reddit’s search functions rather clunky and not user-friendly. Reddit’s search functions when used independently leave much to be desired and work best when paired with Google.

5. Content Quality Control

Another drawback of Reddit is the lack of quality control over the content. While Reddit offers great insights and opportunities for healthy discussions it often comes surrounded by a wide array of misinformation, trolling, and unfavorable advice. Since most Reddit queries are answered through personal experiences, users are more likely to consider them authentic making it much easier to spread misinformation if left unchecked.

6. Accessibility

One of the main factors hindering the growth of Reddit is its accessibility. Google caters to a global audience through online results in various global languages. However, Reddit’s content is mostly available only in the English language, thereby limiting its audience to the English-speaking global population.

What is the Future of Search

The rising popularity of Reddit brings to question the future of search engines. While Reddit has yet to dethrone Google for the top search engine spot, its growing traction among users has highlighted the drawbacks of the SEO-based Google results. While Google needs to adapt to the changing user demand, Reddit has much to gain by cashing in on its popularity by creating a more user-friendly interface. With the entry of AI tools like ChatGPT that offer search results to users in a conversational manner, both Google and Reddit must innovate to stay relevant in the future.

Conclusion

While Reddit has changed the face of online search it is not necessarily a replacement for Google. Google is the perfect search engine for quick and general answers to user queries while Reddit provides deeper insight into specific topics along with authentic, personal answers to queries through personal anecdotes and user expertise.

It is safe to say that at present Reddit has not completely overtaken Google in fact a hybrid approach that uses the two together is the best bet for users.

By combining the two search platforms users can make the most of Google’s search efficiency and Reddit’s authentic, crowd-sourced wisdom.
